Crafty Mom - Halloween part 1

So we don't have ANY of our Halloween decorations with us, and I haven't seen ANY here (not that I've looked, but I don't really expect to see them.)  So I'm forced to either go without (no way!) or make my own (fun!).  My first project was to make a string curtain of simple Halloween colors and shapes.  This is what I ended up with.  I wrote a tutorial on the art blog for fun.

Yay!  I think I need to make more!  But first I need to figure out a better way of hanging them, because this one fell down within a couple of hours.

Next up, DIY Jack-O-Lanterns.  Pumpkins and squash are pricey here, and not shaped for Jack-O-Lanterns, so I'm very excited to try making some from paper mache like the ones here
Cool, huh? I've been wanting to get into paper mache for ages.

So what is Regin doing during all of this?

He LOVED painting.  He wasn't the least bit interested in doing it with his fingers; he wanted a brush, like Mamma.  And it was so fun to hear him say "WOW!" when he saw red paint on his paper.  But I have to say, it's not fun to clean acrylic paint out of his hair, so I'm not sure if he'll get to use Mamma's paints again any time soon.

sorry for the multiple comments posts... this is the last one anyway...
I need help: I'm going to a north pole themed halloween fancy dress party and stumped for ideas. aparently it can be as tenuously linked as I like but haven't got a clue (other than going as a giant magnet, but that might be quite difficult!)
anyway you are really good at fancy dress so thought you'd be the best person to ask!

Nothing wrong with multiple comment posts in my book.

So when is the party exactly? How much time do we have? Bare with me now... I'm totally just brainstorming...

So George's initial thought was a compass with south in every direction. (any way you go from the north pole is south).

My initial thought was Frankenstein's monster. Fun and slightly obscure reference to the north pole. I believe he died there. And then people could accuse you of not following the theme and doing an ordinary halloween costume, but really you are following the theme, ha!

Other thoughts...

animals and people indigenous to the northern areas. Polar bears, inuit, reindeer, seals, sami, greenlanders, arctic fox...

Christmas related things. Santa, elf, etc.

An actual pole with a sign saying "north pole" or just "north."

find a way to dress as one of the historical explorers who went there.

you could be all sparkly and streaked with colors and be aurora borealis. I really like this idea, but I can tell you from experience that body/face paint is actually really difficult to make look pretty, even if it's solid color.

you could go as someone planning to go there and carrying all the necessities (could go along with dressing as one of the explorers, or not) like a flashlight (torch) for winter, a good book, some liquor, fur-edged/lined clothes. Ohh! Even better, you could be a dead (frozen) explorer.

You could be a calendar with "sunrise" marked on March 21st, and days being Xed off to count down.

You could actually be sunrise and have the date of sunrise on you.

You could do some global warming reference and be a puddle of water (wearing blue, hair slicked down, or something like that) and when people ask you could say you are the polar ice cap in X number of years.

There are apparently a group of constellations that are situation around the "celestial north pole" you could go as a constellation or as the mythological figure/creature that gives the constellation its name.

I could keep going, and I am sure George and I both will continue to come up with further ideas until you give us a deadline to stop. :) That's one of our things. ANy of these ideas strike you? I can brainstorm ways to make the costume if you have certain ones in mind.

Normally we're big on pun-type costumes and plays on words, but I don't seem to be coming up with any of those right now. Those are typically really easy to make costumes from too. I will keep thinking to see if I come up with any.

Wow, so many great ideas! I knew you would be a good source of ideas!! i think either north pole or halloween are acceptable as themes, and REALLY like the dead explorer one - lots of blue face paint needed I think!
Also like the aurora borealis ideas... maybe I could just dress in black and get lots of spangly material and attach it to my clothes, rather than face and body paint.
the only other idea I had come up with was a confused hula girl.. but then I was in town last night having been to the cinema and saw loads of students dressed as hula girls and that put me off!
The party is the weekend after next... not a right lot of time, especially when I'm really busy at work at the moment!

UGH! I wrote this yesterday and just now realized that I never posted it.

Thanks! :) I love this stuff. Don't know why I still don't have any ideas I am excited to use for us though. And you're right, there's not much time.

So I came up with the following ones while I was trying to sleep:

Arctic circle (a big hula hoop around your waist held up with suspenders or something, and then cold-weather gear or snow-flakes or something.)

Eskimo kiss (dress as a chocolate kiss (home-made or store bought costume) and then give it the cold-weather wear treatment.

The South Pole, North Pole's evil twin. A pole, a sign saying south, and devil horns.

On top of the world. (somehow build a globe around your waist, some fake legs resting on top of it and then you're sitting on top of the world!)

Future North Pole Tourist (wear typical Hawaiian tourist outfit, though do you want to do that if you're off of hulas?)

Snow (sparkly make up, silver/white clothes, some snow flake cut outs)

Snow queen/ice princess. I like the idea of iridescent, icy beauty. But I wanted to get married in an ice hotel, so I guess it's sort of a thing I have. :)

I could keep going. I guess maybe what I need for our Halloween costumes is a theme to get my mind going! So far I've got for us:

The Black-eyed peas (simple, round green shirt/body covering, then paint black around our eyes.)

some clowns -- boring, but little face paints ticks are one of the few things I have here.

For Regin alone: Boo-boo (a ghost with band-aids (plasters))

A crayon (all one color clothes and a cone hat of same color)

I just saw this one on Costume Idea Zone:
The Three Kings: Elvis, King Kong, Don King
--Regin as Don King!! Hahahhaha!

Another one from costume idea zone:
Painter and His Works of Art (Regin as an artist with a beret, George and I all in white with paint splattered all over). Something that might be doable with our limited resources. But I prefer the idea to be mine. :)

I also like what you said for Aurora Borealis. Then, glittery make up or something to top it off.

Brilliant, thanks! I think with those ideas I might even to convince my friends to dress up (at the moment they're aren't so enthusiastic, but sure Hattie could do snow or an Ice Queen!)

I love your halloween ideas - especially the crayons, between the three of you, you could be a pack of crayons!

Do they make a big thing of halloween in Malaysia? or is it going to be more of an ex-pat (sorry) type thing?
