Penang -- Week 22 -- Birch-Kelawi-Gurney Loop, Photo Tour 1

MONDAY, August 11th
Fantastic day.  I'm feeling awesome all day (no hypoglycemic crashes -- this hasn't happened in months!) and I decide to finally go out with Regin on my back and walk aimlessly around our area.  Afterwards, Regin and I stop to play a little on the lawn by our apartment.  Photos taken with my new 50mm lens. There are too many for one post, so I'm breaking it up.  Also, as is becoming usual, there are more photos on my art blog.
For fun I made a map of my walk with approximate locations of the photos.  You can click and drag around in the map to see where the mall & wet market are, and you can also zoom in to get a better look at the locations of the photos.

Photos:
An abandoned house on Kelawi Street. There are tons of these around waiting for real estate investors to snatch them up. They are generally very worn down looking.
This mosque is very close to our apartment.
Another abandoned house across the street.
Penang-style car wash.  It's a temporary cover in an unpaved parking lot (car park) with some guys who've set up shop with their buckets and sponges.
A nice new apartment building (left) with an older, less cared for one behind.
Those pretty houses in the background are typical.  Old, converted houses that now hold various businesses.  They're often covered with huge signs in the front.  Businesses we see a lot of: spas and slimming salons.  These people are apparently weight-obsessed.
Malaysian phone booths.
A house converted into a 24 'jam' bank.  (jam = hour)
Something I generally don't see in Thornton -- a rooster on a sidewalk.  He and a bunch of other roosters and pigeons hang out next to a roadside temple.
An abandoned apartment building.
And finally we reach Gurney, where people come all day for a quick respite; perched on the wall they admire the view of the sea.

Sorry guys, I didn't actually put up that other post on my art blog that I said would be there. But it's up now, so for reals, if you want to see a few more photos of this segment of my walk, go ahead and use the link above.
