Penang -- Week 2, Part 2

Day 9 - Sunday (Continued)
Off to Kek Lok Si Temple! We take a back road that takes us more into the uninhabited jungle hills. Awesome! And Kek Lok Si is nothing short of spectacular.
I had to stop taking pictures eventually, because everywhere I turned there was another amazing sight and I couldn't put the camera down.
Graffiti?

We walk around the middle part of the complex, visiting various little temples and shrines.

Then we ride an "inclined lift" up to the statue of the goddess of mercy which is supposed to be impressive (the largest statue in South East Asia), but instead of this...we see this...
Disappointing, but the AC in the ride up is totally worth it, and there is a really lovely pond
and you can look out and see for miles and miles. Hills one way, and city and sea the other way.
We stay for a little while and take in the wonderful, light breeze as we have a mini picnic on the grass. Then I take advantage of the diffuse light in the gazebo.

Now, finally we have seen something great that Penang has to offer. But we're tired and sweaty and we need to get Regin home.
I have to eat again on the way, so this time it's a corner in a remote town, with a couple of hawkers. I get goreng and ask for no chili, and it comes to me hotter than I can manage. Grrr... Too bad, that makes me grumpy.

We still manage to make it to the mall tonight. We're almost out of food for Regin, and we have a couple of other needs. So we head for Tesco. We're hoping this is a free-standing supermarket, but it turns out that this Tesco is also attached to the mall. It's also not a supermarket. It's like a super Walmart, but worse. And a little word to anyone who ever plans on coming here... Never, ever, ever, ever, ever, EVER go grocery shopping on Sunday evenings! It's a mad house. It's difficult to walk through many of the aisles, even though they're wide as heck, and at one point I see about 15 or so people (not joking) huddled around a big bin of red onions, all fishing for the best ones. To make matters worse, the goreng has upset my stomach and all they have are squatty potties. AAAAAHHHHHHHHH get me out of here!

More soon!

Oooh, how beautiful! The picture of the view for miles reminds me of the views we saw in Guatemala.

It's cool to see Regin and George using the ring sling, how do they like it?

Maybe they will be done fixing up the statue before you go and you can see it the way it's meant to be seen :).

And finally, sqaut toilets are actually better for you :). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Squat_toilet
One benefit they don't list is that I bet you develop some killer glutes, lol.

Better or not, I really don't want to squat. Water is also more hygienic than wiping with TP, but I'm not using the hoses they have in there. I have my stash of tissues that I carry with me in case I break down and use a public restroom.

Kek Lok Si was really great. And we only saw maybe half of it. Apparently we also have to see it at night because it's all lit up!

Oh and PS I don't think George like the ring sling. It's mine, I like it much more than the pouch, but we still don't use the sling very often. Here, it was that or nothing. The stroller couldn't have made it with us and we have no Baby Bjorn type carrier.

LOL, I never was fond of squatting when we lived in Italy. Somehow I ran into that wiki page the other day and I was surprised that most of the world squats and that it's supposed to be better for you. It's funny how we do things so differently here in the US and many times to our own detriment.

I keep trying the pouch I have and it's just not working for me so far. It seems like her head is too scrunched. I've been using the wrap when we go out and it's worked great, but it would be way too hot for you in Penang.
